“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all
your mind” and “love your neighbor as you love yourself”. These are the
greatest commandment on which the whole Law of Moses and teachings of the prophets
depend on. But what does “love” mean? How do we love?
The world has given “love” a lot of meanings and metaphors. It was compared to
anything and was related to affection, desire, relationship and sex. But love
is beyond mere liking and feeling; love is a decision to give.
Love
is the willingness to sacrifice or give up something for someone or something.
It is not selfish and it seeks the best for others. Loving is voluntarily
giving a part of you for other’s sake. It is the readiness to offer your life
to somebody.
True love is expressed in self-control, patience, trust and whole-hearted
service. It is not just a feeling; it is an act.
Love is a word dealt responsibly, for the Scripture tell us that “one who does
not love, does not know God, for God is love.” God love us first and Jesus is
the expression of His love. He gave His only begotten Son to redeem us, to save
us from the power of death. Aside from that, God is love. If God never fails,
love, too, never fails. If you do not love, then God is not with you.
God have set an
example in loving—an example we must follow. Offer to God all your heart, all
your soul, and your entire mind. That is showing love. Love is measured by how
much we can give or sacrifice for others. How about you? What can you
voluntarily give to others? Are you ready to give your life for God?
